We must be very careful in choosing hardwood. It is important to understand how to install correctly, how to maintain and eventually repair these floors. Hardwood floors can be placed anywhere in your home.
There are several different ways for hardwood installation and the options depend on the product you have chosen to use for the cover flooring.
It would be nice to be taken into account when you make the product selection to consider your installation options.
The hardwood installation flooring is very similar to the arrangement of the parts of some puzzle, like putting a puzzle together.
There are three main hardwood installation methods - nail-down installation, glue-down installation, and floating installation. It is assumed that you have a level subfloor that is wood for nail-down installation.
Here in this article I will focus on and try to present in details the nail-down hardwood installation.
It can be described in several basic steps: remove any baseboards, make sure your subfloor is clear to the walls.
Then screw down any loose or squeaky boards undercut any door jambs so that the wood could be installed underneath.
Then, start to lay out the first row and if it is possible, try to run the boards perpendicular to your floor joists.
At this point of the hardwood installation process you could account for any out of square issues in your room. You could measure from one side of the wall to the other and adjust any discrepancies with the first row.
Now you can layout all your boards for 3 feet or so, make your length cuts accordingly. Then, keep nailing down the next rows and make sure you adjust the nailer so that it countersinks the boards. Keep alternating nailing and dry-fitting boards. That is to be done to assure a proper fit. Nail around any obstacles in the floor and make sure you leave the appropriate gap around any of these obstacles. Face nail the last few rows of the cover flooring when you come to the edge of the room. Next step is to install your transitions and base moldings.
Glue-down hardwood installation is similar to the nail-down installation, but in the steps where you nail, you glue-down specifically.
